The name is used
for the area watered by the Euphrates and Tigris Rivers and its
tributaries, roughly comprising modern Iraq and part of Syria. South of modern
Bagdad, the sandy plains of the rivers was called the land of Sumer and
Akkad in the
third millennium. Mesopotamia is not the name
for any specific people.
Rather Mesopotamia had 4 groups
of people who dominated the region at different times throughout history.
